According to Miragenews, recently, the South Australian government announced that new smoking and e-cigarette measures will be implemented in public places to protect public health. These measures will be implemented in sync with the national reform to restrict electronic cigarettes, and the import of disposable electronic cigarettes will be banned from January 1, 2024.
Starting from March 1, 2024, the South Australian government has mandated that individuals who smoke or use electronic cigarettes in outdoor public places will face a fine of AUD 105. Serious violators can be prosecuted and fined up to AUD 750. These non-smoking areas include:
Patrol flag area and beaches within 50 meters and docks within 5 meters
Schools and daycare facilities and within a 10 meter radius
Non residential building entrances and their 10 meter range, such as shopping centers, government and commercial buildings
Public hospitals and medical institutions, private hospitals, and within 10 meters of their boundaries
Outdoor public swimming facilities
Large event venues declared under the Major Events Act 2013
Competition and viewing areas during sports events under the age of 18 and within a 10 meter radius
Starting from January 28th, in order to inform the community about these new bans, the South Australian government will place advertisements on social media, radio, billboards, buses, and shopping centers.
The South Australian government has also proposed a dual penalty for the sale or supply of tobacco and e-cigarette products to children, with fines increasing from AUD 1200 to AUD 2400. The maximum prosecution fine for first-time tobacco or e-cigarette companies will also be increased from AUD 20000 to AUD 40000, and the maximum prosecution fine for individuals will be increased from AUD 5000 to AUD 10000.
