According to a BBC report on January 29th, the UK government has announced a ban on the sale of disposable e-cigarettes in the UK to address the increasing use of e-cigarettes by young people.
The report states that although the implementation time is not yet clear, the government plans to use existing environmental protection regulations to enforce this ban. Once the timeline is established, retailers will have a six-month transition period to adapt to this change.
For refillable e-cigarettes, the government will strengthen efforts to prevent their sale as children's flavored refillable e-cigarettes and require simpler and less attractive packaging. In addition, the government also requires stores to place refillable e-cigarettes out of children's sight and away from other products that may trigger purchases, such as candy. The government has stated that it will conduct further public consultations to determine which flavors and sales methods for refillable e-cigarettes should be prohibited.
British Prime Minister Richie Sunak explained the plan in detail during his school visit on Monday. In a statement, he pointed out, "As any parent or teacher who cares about children's growth knows, one of the current worrying trends is the increase in children's use of e-cigarettes, so we must take decisive measures before this trend becomes widespread."
This decision is a measure aimed at achieving the goal of a "smokeless generation", following last year's announcement of a ban on selling cigarettes to people born on or after January 1, 2009. Although the sale of e-cigarettes to individuals under the age of 18 has been banned, the government emphasizes that disposable e-cigarettes, usually sold in smaller and more attractive packaging, are one of the key factors leading to a sharp increase in adolescent smoking.
Eve Peters, UK Government Affairs Director at Lost Mall, stated that the company supports the government's desire to prevent children from using e-cigarettes, but is disappointed with the complete ban.
