The Indonesian government has decided to impose taxes on e-cigarettes or e-cigarettes starting from January 1, 2024. Finance Ministry spokesperson Deni Surjantoro confirmed this news on Saturday, December 30, 2023.
Deni explained that this tax is aimed at curbing the use of e-cigarettes, and according to Law No. 1/2022, this tax provision is set out in the Electronic Cigarette Tax Law 2023 (PMK No. 143/PMK/2023) established by the Minister of Finance. The law on financial relations between central and local governments, also known as the HKPD law.
According to the information on the website of the Ministry of Finance, jdih.kemenkeu.go.id, the tax on cigarettes, including e-cigarettes, will be 10% of the current consumption tax rate.
