According to publictechnology on March 19th, the HMRC (HMRC) stated that it will promote a new electronic cigarette tax system through mandatory "digital channels".
In the recent spring budget, Treasury Secretary Jeremy Hunt announced that e-cigarettes will be subject to consumption tax like tobacco and alcohol products. At present, electronic cigarette products are only subject to a standard value-added tax rate of 20% and have not been included in the consumption tax.
In the consultation document on the new tax plan, HMRC stated that "the foundation of HMRC's operation is' digital default ', which will mandate all companies within the scope of obligations to register, report, and make payments online through digital channels, except for those excluded due to protected features." The mandatory use of online channels will help ensure lawful operations and minimize errors and fraudulent behavior.
The document reveals that once the new tax takes effect in October 2026, it will mean "UK manufacturers who are obligated to pay taxes will have to register with HMRC, report information on the goods they have produced, and pay their taxes through monthly returns."
The tax authority stated that this measure will provide support and clear guidance to enterprises before implementation. "The digital services used for registration will also be launched in a timely manner to prepare businesses for the introduction of tariffs. We expect the registration system to be similar to the existing consumption tax system."
