According to Penarthtimes, the Scottish government has announced a ban on disposable e-cigarettes until April 1, 2025. Previously, Scotland had banned the use of disposable e-cigarettes along with England and Wales. This legislative draft was consulted nationwide in the UK with the aim of creating a "smokeless generation".
Scottish Environment Minister Lorna Slater stated that the three UK regions have jointly set a date for implementing the ban. The draft legislation will be publicly solicited for comments before March 8, 2024, and then promoted in Scotland using the powers granted by the 1990 Environmental Protection Act.
Lorna Slater pointed out, "We are legislating to ban the sale and supply of disposable e-cigarettes to reduce smoking behavior among non-smokers and young people, as well as further reduce the impact on the environment." This ban will improve public health and protect the environment.
If approved by parliament, the sale and supply of disposable electronic cigarettes will be prohibited. This decision is based on concerns that more and more young people are using e-cigarettes. It is estimated that over 26 million disposable e-cigarettes were discarded in Scotland last year.
The Scottish government will also propose a plan within the UK to increase the age for purchasing tobacco, making it illegal for anyone born after January 1, 2009 to purchase the product. This will be proposed through legislation within the UK, while Scotland requires legislative approval of the motion.
Sheila Duffy, CEO of ASH Scotland, an anti smoking charity, said these plans are "an important step forward.".
